The first official title of the men's traineras season was decided in Getaria with a spectacular regatta. Orio emerged victorious in the Gipuzkoa Championship, beating Donostiarra by a mere 33 hundredths of a second. Donostiarra had been six seconds behind the champions at the first maneuver. Getaria secured third place, ahead of Hondarribia.
The boat steered by Iker Zabala set the best times from the first turn (4:44). After a strong first leg, Orio established a six-second lead over Donostiarra and Getaria, and seven seconds over Hondarribia at the first buoy. In the second maneuver, Orio again led (10:00), with only a three-second advantage over Donostiarra and four over Getaria.
At the final turn, Donostiarra remained three seconds behind Orio, with Getaria nine seconds back and Hondarribia sixteen seconds behind. In the final stretch, Orio and Donostiarra engaged in an extremely close battle, decided by those 33 hundredths of a second.
The champions did not dare to celebrate their victory until the judges confirmed their win. The boat helmed by Gorka Aranberri thus revalidated the title won in this competition last season, and they will once again aim to win everything this campaign.
The top four classified boats raced together in the third heat. San Nikolas finished the regatta in 20 minutes, 24.22 seconds. Following Donostiarra (20:24.55), Getaria (20:30.73) and Hondarribia (20:40.20) completed the heat.
The traineras enjoyed very good sea conditions. Hibaika won the first heat ahead of San Pedro and Mutriku. The intermediate turn was won by Zarautz, who narrowly defeated San Juan by just one second and 69 hundredths.
