The Kantauri Heritage Museum, with the support of Zumaia City Council, has opened the Itsasertzeko baporeak photo exhibition in the Oxford hall of the Alondegia cultural center, recalling the town's rich maritime history.

This exhibition comprises a total of 50 photographs, showcasing images of ships from the 1940s, 1950s, and 1960s. Jabier Txapartegi, director of the Kantauri museum, curated the exhibition with the aim of highlighting the historical importance of Zumaia's maritime heritage and industry.
Many of the vessels displayed in the hall were dismantled in Zumaia, arriving at the local port in various sizes and forms. The ships featured in the exhibition were coastal steamers, meaning they operated close to the shoreline, reflecting the nature of Zumaia's maritime activity.

"Txapartegi has compared Zumaia to the city of Detroit in the United States, emphasizing the importance that industry has had in the town."

Txapartegi also recalled the renown of Zumaia's cement, as the town received numerous foreign visitors seeking this material. This underscores Zumaia's international influence and industrial development.
The exhibition will be open to the public in the Oxford hall until the 19th of this month. Visiting hours are Monday to Friday from 09:30 to 13:30 and from 16:00 to 20:00, and on Saturdays from 09:30 to 13:30.
