Zumaia welcomes children and young people with special needs to Itzurun beach again this year with inclusive surf and paddle surf activities. Following last year's positive experience, the ZISKE Surf Association of Zumaia, the 'la Caixa' Foundation – through the CaixaBank Zumaia office – and the Zumaia City Council continue their collaboration on this initiative.
The courses will run from late June to early September, on Tuesdays and Thursdays, in two shifts: from 4:00 PM to 5:30 PM and from 5:30 PM to 7:00 PM. The activities will take place in a friendly, fun environment adapted to each participant's needs. The course fee is 50 euros. For more information and registration, contact villarferrer@gmail.com.
Additionally, on July 18th, a new edition of the Inclusive Surf Festival will be held. This special day will bring together families, instructors, volunteers, and participants to celebrate sport, the beach, and community. This initiative was born from the drive of 'Goiko' and Julen Yeregui (ZISKE), who have been working for years to make surfing accessible to everyone.
This summer, for the first time, they will have their own dedicated day, having previously been integrated into the Surf Fest organized annually by ZISKE. The goal is simple: for any child to enjoy the sea, learn, gain confidence, and feel part of a group through surfing. These activities not only promote sports but also help create friendships, improve autonomy, and provide unique experiences.
Organizers report that 19 minors participated in the inclusive festival last year, and they aim to replicate the positive atmosphere this year. They have issued a call for volunteers interested in assisting. For more information and registration: villarferrer@gmail.com.
María del Villar Ferrer, representative of CaixaBank Zumaia, thanked the representatives of ZISKE and the Councilor for Sports of the Zumaia City Council, Aitor Manterola, for their work in making surfing more accessible. Manterola, in turn, thanked CaixaBank and ZISKE for their involvement. The Telmo Deun rowing club also contributed by lending life vests.
The Zumaia City Council aims to promote broader work in adapted sports, fostering collaboration among associations and clubs. Manterola announced that they will meet with families of children with functional diversity to understand their needs and explore ways to expand inclusion in sports. The council will provide further details in due course.
