Zumaia City Council has completed the Erkibe garden works and will now launch a process to gather input from citizens and local stakeholders for a food sovereignty project at the building.

Zumaia City Council has already completed the works on the Erkibe garden, and will now commence the process related to the building. The aim is to develop a project linked to food sovereignty, but for this, it will first collect contributions from the citizens. Over the coming months, various sessions, debates, and meetings will be organized for citizens and local stakeholders, with the first one taking place this coming Wednesday.
As explained by the council, it has been working for a long time on creating a market based on food sovereignty in the town. In 2023, with the assistance of the cooperative LZB arkitektura, a preliminary project was developed to transform Erkibe into a market for local products. Additionally, some local stakeholders, such as Alberga, presented a food project that would promote food sovereignty.
Now, the council will initiate the process to present the work carried out in recent years to the citizens. The process will be guided by the cooperatives Farapi and Biziola, and will be divided into two phases. In the first, a listening and diagnostic phase will be carried out: the council has opened an open questionnaire –it can be filled out at this link–, and debate sessions will also be held in the coming days. This way, initial opinions and needs regarding the project will be gathered, and the existing vision and interest in the town will be understood. Producers, merchants, citizens, and municipal representatives will participate in this reflection.
Furthermore, the first session for citizens will be held this Wednesday, in the Oxford hall, starting at 18:00. The council has invited anyone interested in the topic to attend. To facilitate the organization of the session, registration has been requested at the tourist office, by calling 943-14 33 96, or by writing to turismoa@zumaia.eus.
After the summer, the council will tackle the second part of the process: the collective construction phase. In this phase, various sessions will be organized, and based on the contributions received previously, the foundations of the project to be located in Erkibe will be defined. Key topics to be addressed will include defining the market's objectives and values, determining the services to be offered, agreeing on the organizational model, and establishing future lines of work.
The works on the garden of the Erkibe building have now been completed. The council will hold an open event to present the new space to the public and provide details about the process on June 3rd, in the garden itself, at 18:30.
