Residents of Zarautz and surrounding areas will gather near the cross of Pagoeta on the first Sunday of June to celebrate the 60th edition of Pagoeta Day, organized by the Pagoeta Mountain Club.

This year's celebration will be special, as the Department of Green Territorial Balance of the Provincial Council of Gipuzkoa and the Pagoeta Mountain Club have jointly organized 'Pagoeta Natural Park Day'. The aim of this initiative is to value the park's contribution in terms of its flora, fauna, livestock farming, agriculture, and leisure opportunities. Collaboration has also been established with the Aia Town Council and the public company Etorlur.
The event will take place on June 7th, as the Pagoeta Mountain Club of Zarautz has been organizing Pagoeta Day for decades, and this year marks the 60th edition. The choice of date also took into account Europe's Natura 2000 Day and European Day of Natural Parks.
Activities organized by the Provincial Council will commence at 10:15 AM at the summit of Pagoeta. For those coming from Zarautz, the hike starting at 8:30 AM from the Guria tavern is recommended for those accustomed to mountain walking and with appropriate gear. It is not suitable for young children or dogs.
At the summit, participants will have the opportunity to see the Pottoka breed horses up close, with experts from the Gipuzkoa Pottoka Breeders Association explaining details about their care and management. Following this, the functioning of Basabiz (a wildlife recovery center in Urnieta) will be presented, and a recovered bird will be released.
Among the activities, there will be a demonstration of Basque stick fighting by the group from Oiartzun, an ancient defensive technique. Afterwards, at 11:30 AM, a mass will be held near the cross, followed by trikitixa music performed by the TRIK Kultura association of Zarautz.
Throughout the morning, food and drink will be available thanks to the Pagoeta Mountain Club of Zarautz, although attendees must bring their own glasses.
The Pagoeta Natural Park, covering 29 square kilometers, was declared a protected area in 1998 and became a Special Conservation Area (SAC) of the Natura 2000 Network in 2012. 88% of the park lies within the municipality of Aia, with the remainder in the municipalities of Zarautz and Zestoa. Its landscape is shaped by livestock farming, agriculture, and forestry, and it serves as an important leisure area for the people of Gipuzkoa.
