The Azkoitia City Council aims to revive the Txiki Golf, refurbishing the building that presides over the playing field, with an approved budget of 50,000 euros. This funding will be allocated to the renovation of the roof and the public restrooms.
The next step will be the awarding of the establishment's concession through a tender process. Mayor Ana Azkoitia stated, "The Txiki Golf has been closed for years, and it's a shame because it has a good location and could be a profitable activity, but given its condition, we believe we must first condition the place. Therefore, our idea is to renovate at least the roof and bathrooms to enable its concession and ensure it doesn't remain vacant."
Records indicate that the Txiki Golf opened in the early 1990s. For a long time, it served as a stopping point for walkers enjoying the scenic route between Azkoitia and Azpeitia. Besides offering drinks and snacks, the venue provided the opportunity to test golfing skills on various holes spread across the adjacent plot.
However, it became disused several years ago, and now the Azkoitia City Council intends to reverse this situation by renovating the facility, following an agreement reached in the plenary session. This agreement was part of a credit modification, which also approved a 50,000 euro allocation to relocate the ecological gardens from Altamira.
The chosen new location for these gardens is Santa Clara, where the council has leased a plot next to the Uxer stream. The relocation is driven by a future real estate development project planned for the current garden site. This land is privately owned and linked to a future urban development by a private developer who has already applied for a building permit for housing.
The new site in Santa Clara offers significant advantages in size compared to Altamira. It covers an area of 8,500 m² and can accommodate up to 90 garden plots, compared to the current 69 at Altamira. According to the Azkoitia City Council, the plot will be ready for the next planting season in spring, allowing the continued normal use of the Altamira gardens in the interim.
The credit modification agreed upon by the council also includes other objectives, such as the renovation of the roof of the Aizkibel library, for which 225,000 euros have been allocated. Additionally, 30,000 euros have been assigned for the removal of the electrical pole in Txalonerreka, adding to the 300,000 euros previously designated for this purpose. Finally, the budget for the tender of the renovation of the Ikastola Xabier Munibe courtyard has been increased.
