Azkoitia has commenced its Andra Mari festivals on August 14, 2026, with a large firecracker launch and a tribute to the Sahatsa Dance Group for its 50th anniversary. The town council has organized a five-day program with activities for all ages and tastes.
In the town hall's plenary chamber, the mayor and other council representatives paid tribute to the members of the Sahatsa Dance Group for their five decades of work in promoting tradition and Basque folklore. The mayor expressed gratitude, praising their efforts in respecting Basque culture and identity. "The Sahatsa Dance Group has become a cornerstone of Basque identity," stated the mayor, recalling the group's founding in 1976 during the transition period.
Eñaut Aldazabal and Arantzazu Olalde launched the firecracker, accompanied by Mayor Juan Luis Lizabe and Ana Azkoitia. The event created a vibrant atmosphere among the citizens gathered in the square.
On behalf of Sahatsa, Pello Larrañaga expressed his gratitude and the honor of being on the town hall balcony. Before the firecracker, two dancers from the group performed in the plenary chamber with works by Pablo Sarasate and Mikel Laboa.
Following the firecracker, the Municipal Band played "Ondo pasau Andramaixek," and accompanied by the Parrokiko and Iraurgi Choirs, they sang "Azkoitia," encouraging the public to enjoy the festivities.
The mayor conveyed an optimistic message to the citizens gathered in the square, under the slogan "Children, youth, and adults, live the 2026 Andramaixek! Long live the festivals! And live them well, and with respect!". The town council has called for respect, equality, and inclusion during the celebrations.
