The Department of Works, Maintenance, and Infrastructures of the Irun City Council reports that on Monday, September 28, renovation works have begun on the interior plaza of the Casas del Juncal. This project will refurbish the public space to enhance the entire neighborhood environment, located at the junction between Gipuzkoa Avenue and Elizatxo Avenue.
This initiative, whose project design originated from a winning proposal in the citizen-led Participatory Budgets, will allow for the renewal of outdated urban elements and, on the other hand, improve accessibility and add inclusive children's play equipment, two priority aspects in shared residential spaces like this.
This improvement is also part of the Citizen Security and Coexistence Pact signed in 2022, which proposes urban transformations in specific neighborhoods to enhance the design, urban image, and lighting of certain areas, identifying and addressing problem spots.
The current intervention seeks to expand the plaza's play areas to give it a greater park-like character. This will be achieved by physically separating pedestrian pathways from play zones using barriers. A wooden fence will be installed around the entire perimeter of the new park to prevent dogs from entering and to make the entrance signage more effective regarding the rules within the enclosed area.
The existing continuous wooden bench in the upper area will be replaced by a smaller one to free up space for children's play, thus transforming its current use from a passive resting area to a more active and participatory space. An opening will be made in the existing concrete wall to improve visual connectivity, contributing to a more inclusive, safe, and welcoming urban environment.
New play equipment will be installed, including a slide connecting the upper and lower zones, adding unity and dynamism. Several existing play structures will be replaced, and repairs will be made to those being kept. The project also aims to improve urban furniture, lighting, and garden areas, and to renew railings and handrails to comply with current accessibility and safety regulations.
The awarded budget is 226,721.94 euros, and the company 4 Badia Mantentze Zerbitzuak S.L.U. will be responsible for executing the works within a period of three months.
