The ecological platform Jauzi Uribe Kosta has once again highlighted the deficiencies in public transport within the region. The collective has initiated a signature collection campaign to demand an «urgent» improvement in services, encompassing both the metro and bus connections in the coastal municipalities.
The association believes that the population growth recorded in recent years has not been matched by a strengthening of mobility options. Consequently, members of the organization have visited various points in Berango, Sopela, Urduliz, and Plentzia – towns connected by Metro Line 1 – to gather support. They have also set up information tables near Gorliz Hospital to broaden the reach of their demands among users and healthcare workers.
“"Technical possibilities exist without the need for major investments."
Among the main demands is an increase in metro frequencies towards Plentzia, which is one of the sections with the fewest trains in the entire network. Additionally, they are calling for extended bus operating hours and the reinstatement of night bus lines that were eliminated after the pandemic. The disappearance of these routes particularly affects those who work special shifts or return home in the early hours.
They also advocate for a reinforcement of Bizkaibus services with new routes and greater frequency on existing ones. Currently, only two main connections operate between different localities in Uribe Kosta, both of which suffer from excessive waiting times. As an alternative, they propose implementing shuttle services to link areas far from railway stations.
