The Provincial Government has greenlit three new initiatives aimed at enhancing road safety and reducing the environmental impact of roads in the Tolosaldea region. Key projects include the construction of a new roundabout on the GI-2631 road in Zizurkil, the installation of acoustic barriers on the N-I highway in Tolosa, and the creation of a new pedestrian route in Berastegi.
In Zizurkil, a new roundabout will be built on the GI-2631, replacing the current intersection at Olentzo with the GI-3281. The primary goal is to improve road safety at this junction, which handles approximately 7,000 vehicles daily. Additionally, a new access ramp will be created to facilitate entry to Polígono 29. The project, budgeted at 635,661 euros, is expected to commence this autumn and last for three months.
According to provincial spokesperson Irune Berasaluze, the works will also enhance mobility for pedestrians and public transport users, with the addition of two new bus stops and safe pedestrian access, along with LED public lighting.
In a second initiative, acoustic barriers will be installed on the N-I in the Santa Lutzia neighborhood of Tolosa to mitigate traffic noise affecting a nearby residence. This measure, part of the Road Noise Action Plan, involves a 97.16-meter-long, four-meter-high barrier. The project, with a base budget of 551,286.94 euros, is scheduled to begin by the end of the year and will take three months to complete.
Lastly, in Berastegi, a new safe pedestrian itinerary will be developed along the GI-2130 road. This project entails constructing a parallel sidewalk and a signalized pedestrian crossing in front of the Eguzkitza house. With a tender budget of 277,822.85 euros, the construction works are expected to take two months.
These initiatives, as explained by the Department of Road Infrastructure and Territorial Strategy, are part of a broader effort to improve safety and mobility in the region, addressing citizen needs and the increasing traffic volume on these routes.
