The Department of Health of the Basque Government is making significant progress in improving healthcare in Tolosaldea. Eight companies have submitted their proposals for the tender to draft the project for the new public Hospital of Tolosa. The contract is expected to be formalized in June, at which point the construction project will begin to be drafted.
This advancement follows the approval of the hospital's Functional Plan, which defines the care model and services of the future center. The Department of Health and Osakidetza will allocate 107.6 million euros to this infrastructure, with construction anticipated to start in mid-2028 and conclude in 2031.
The new hospital will be located on an 8,445 square meter plot on the southeast side of Iurramendi hill. The building will have seven floors, four above ground and three underground, two of which will be used for parking.
The center will offer a wide range of medical services, including 50 external consultations, three minor surgery rooms, and specialties such as cardiology, neurology, gynecology, traumatology, and internal medicine. Additionally, it will feature a radiodiagnosis area equipped with magnetic resonance imaging, CT scans, and ultrasound, as well as a surgical unit with four operating rooms, one specialized in ophthalmology.
Regarding hospitalization, it will have 90 beds distributed across three units: acute patients, special situations, and intermediate stay. The emergency service will include a triage area, consultations, an observation zone with eight boxes, and a resuscitation room. The hospital will require a staff of 380 healthcare professionals, complemented by 98 general service professionals.
These improvements are part of the Basque Health Pact and the Basque Government's strategy to strengthen a more accessible, integrated, and sustainable public healthcare system. The new Tolosa hospital will become a benchmark in Gipuzkoa, especially in diagnostic procedures and complementary tests.
