Sopela's Ander Deuna Ikastola will honor Nikola Telleria on June 6th, recalling his life and his fight for the Basque language. The event will begin at 12:00 PM at the ikastola itself, and after a welcome, excerpts from the documentary Apaiz Gartzela will be screened. Additionally, guests Xabier Amuriza and Ritxi Lizartza will be present. Student productions will also feature, and a floral offering will be made at the monolith at the end.
Nikola Telleria (Nabarniz, 1916 – Sopela, 1975) was a priest from Sopela, an euskera teacher at the night school, and one of the co-founders of Ander Deuna Ikastola. He was imprisoned in Zamora and was notable for his activism for the Basque language and rights. The ikastola will commemorate his journey, centered around the message "izan zirelako izango gara" (because they were, we will be).
Beyond the tribute, the Spring Festival (Udaberriko Jaiak) will feature a full day's program. In the morning, starting at 10:00 AM, sports activities for primary and secondary school students will kick off the festivities, followed by rural sports for preschoolers at 11:00 AM. At 12:30 PM, a pandero parade will commence.
In the afternoon, there will be a children's lunch (1:45 PM) followed by a magic show. The adult lunch will start at 2:45 PM, after which bertsolaris (improvised Basque singers) and a musical bingo are scheduled, along with the ikastola's raffle. At 4:30 PM, there will be water games, and at 5:00 PM, music will play, concluding the festival at 9:00 PM.
Tickets for the lunches will be on sale at the ikastola's office. Organizers have requested that attendees bring their own glasses from home.
