The Kanpezu-Ioar Mountain Half Marathon has completely sold out its available bibs before this Sunday, with 400 participants registered. Santa Cruz de Campezo will once again be filled with runners eager to enjoy the mountains. This event continues to grow year after year.
This race marks its eighth edition and is part of the Euskal Herriko Kopa of mountain races. It also counts towards the Álava Championship, in both absolute and junior categories.
The event offers two distinct routes. The main one, as in previous years, covers over 26 kilometers and accumulates nearly 2,000 meters of positive elevation gain. It is a demanding race that leaves its mark on the legs. The second route is shorter: 13.5 kilometers with 750 meters of elevation gain. Less strenuous, but equally special.
Both routes share the same setting. The Sierra de Codés will be the playground, with Mount Ioar as the highest point. From there, the Campezo valley and the Ebro valley can be seen. The landscape is supportive, even if the effort offers little respite.
The start will be from Samuel Picaza square. The half marathon will begin at 09:00 AM. The shorter race will start an hour later, at 10:00 AM. Everything begins and ends in the same place, where there will also be an atmosphere throughout the morning.
The organization also aims for the event to leave a positive mark on the area. Therefore, participants will receive local products in a bag, a simple way to value what is produced in the Montaña Alavesa. Littering outside designated points is prohibited, and those who do not comply will be disqualified. The mountain is part of the race, and the goal is to maintain it as it is. Behind the race, more than a hundred volunteers ensure everything runs smoothly, marking the route, preparing aid stations, and assisting those who cross the finish line.
