A tragic incident has marked the recent news in Zaratamo. On August 29th, the Ertzaintza (Basque Police) discovered the body of a 53-year-old cyclist on the BI-3702 road, connecting Zaratamo and Arrigorriaga. The primary hypothesis of the police is that the cyclist veered off the road, and an investigation has been launched to determine the causes of death. This road is frequently used by many cyclists.
In terms of festivities, Zaratamo celebrated its annual events in Elexalde, featuring concerts, children's activities, a community meal, Basque pelota matches, a dance, and various competitions. Furthermore, on September 12th, the association Aztarnak Muralismo will host the second edition of the ‘Mila Koloredun Jaia’ (Festival of a Thousand Colors) in Arkotxa, supported by the Zaratamo City Council. This event will include the creation of a participatory mural, along with workshops and exhibitions.
Regarding sports activities, the registration period for the 2026/2027 season will be open from September 2nd to 18th at the centers in Arkotxa, Elexalde, and Moiordin. Classes such as Zumba, Pilates, Total Fitness, and Functional Training will be offered starting in October. Applications can be submitted in person or online, with payments due quarterly.
In the realm of Basque pelota, Oier Elorzek, alongside Arribillaga from Zizur Mayor, will participate in the 50th Josetxo Etxandi Memorial in Lezo on September 3rd.
Finally, on August 11th, the Ertzaintza arrested a 19-year-old youth in Zaratamo in connection with an attempted armed robbery with a bladed weapon that occurred in Santutxu (Bilbao) on June 13th. The perpetrator allegedly threatened a bakery employee with a knife, demanding money from the till, but fled without success.
