Over thirteen seasons of competing in Europe, Surne Bilbao Basket has traversed nearly 5,000 kilometers, from Tbilisi, its most distant competitive location, to Gasteiz, its closest. The Bilbao team has played against Kutaisi, the Georgian champion, in Tbilisi, and visited Gasteiz during the 2011-12 Euroleague season.
Between these two geographical points, the team has encountered 23 countries and 73 diverse opponents, building its European legacy across the four current tournaments and reaching three finals. Since its debut in the 2008-09 season at La Casilla against Hemofarm Vrsac from Serbia, Germany has been the most frequent destination for the team.
In Germany, the team has faced nine different rivals, ranging from classics like Alba Berlin or Bayern Munich to emerging clubs such as Niners Chemnitz. Turkey follows, having been visited eight times and in each of the four competitions the team has participated in. France, with seven opponents, completes the top three preferred destinations for the 'men in black'.
In recent seasons, participation in the FIBA Europe Cup has opened up the map to previously unimaginable locations such as Romania, Slovakia, Portugal, Hungary, and even Scotland. Apart from Baskonia, six other ACB teams have been opponents of the Bilbao side in Europe. Interestingly, a review of match locations reveals a void in Scandinavian and Nordic countries. Despite having had players from Iceland, Sweden, Norway, or Denmark in its rosters, Surne Bilbao has never played against teams from these nations, nor from Finland.
