Basque cyclist Pello Bilbao has announced his retirement from professional cycling at the end of this season, concluding a 17-year career to prioritize his family, with his final rides in the Itzulia.
Cyclist Pello Bilbao, from Gernika, has decided to end his professional career at the close of the current season. He made the announcement before the start of the final stage of the Itzulia in Bergara. He stated that the Tour de France, the Clásica de San Sebastián, and the Circuito de Getxo will be his last races, believing it to be the best way to leave cycling.
“
"I wanted to say it at home because this is the most special race for me. It will be my last year. It has been a privilege to have been a professional cyclist. Being Basque, having this passion. Having these races, which others don't, having cycling schools and roads and places like this that are a paradise for training."
In statements released by his team, Bahrain, Bilbao emphasized his passion and the demands of cycling. He admitted feeling “different” since making the decision, perceiving each race as more significant. He hopes to finish the season in the best possible way, either by achieving a special result or simply by doing his job well.
At 36 years old, Pello Bilbao will remove the pins that have held his competitive number for 17 years. His successful career includes 17 victories, notably the Issoire stage in the 2023 Tour de France, two stages in the 2019 Giro, and a stage in the 2022 Itzulia. He has ridden for teams such as Naturgas, Orbea, Euskaltel-Euskadi, Caja Rural, Astana, and Bahrain.

"In life there are priorities and for me the priority is family, the kids, their education, being able to be with them. I wouldn't change anything I do with them for a cycling result."
According to an interview with this newspaper in December, family is the main reason behind Bilbao's decision. Married to Andrea and father of Martina and Markel, the latter born last December, the cyclist is embarking on a new life stage to fully enjoy his children's childhood.
