Oreka Circular Economy, a startup founded in Bilbao in 2020, is tackling food waste by using technology to connect canteens and supermarkets with social organizations, distributing 70 tons of food monthly.

The startup Oreka Circular Economy, established in Bilbao in 2020, is dedicated to combating food waste. This technological company links school canteens, hospital dining rooms, and supermarket chains with social entities that receive their daily food surpluses.

The recovered food is in perfect condition but lacks commercial outlets, either because meal services have closed or because, despite being perfectly edible, it is nearing its expiration date and will no longer be sold. The startup prioritizes immediate distribution to nearby neighborhoods and towns where social organizations require these food items.
According to a study by the Basque Government, each person in Euskadi wastes 142 kilograms of food annually, with 40 kilograms going directly to the trash. This amounts to over 311 tons of food per year. Globally, more than 30% of food production ends up in the trash, despite being in perfect condition.
Centers identifying food surpluses use the Oreka Circular Economy application to schedule donations. This tool offers a quick and efficient way to donate food, much of which is already cooked. Subsequently, their logistics chains safely recover and deliver the surpluses to social organizations.
An added benefit is that donor establishments receive tax advantages. What was once a cost for them—food destined for the trash—can now, through their donations, provide up to 45% of its value as a tax saving at the end of the year.
The startup, which originated in Bilbao in 2020 and was temporarily inactive due to the pandemic, is now rapidly expanding. Initially, Oreka Circular Economy donated around 50 meals, and now distributes between 60 and 70 tons of food per month, operates in seven autonomous communities, and supports dozens of social organizations daily throughout the year.
