A protest by municipal building cleaners in Bilbao has forced the closure of access to the city via San Mamés, causing kilometer-long traffic jams.

Cleaners working in Bilbao's municipal buildings have entered their ninth week of strike action. Following the blockage of the San Mamés tunnels, the demonstration is expected to extend to Moyua.
The workers have been engaged in protests and strike days since February, demanding better working conditions and salaries. They allege that the concessionary company, FCC (UTE Bio Eraikigarbi), imposes part-time contracts of less than 20 hours per week, heavy workloads, and a hiring policy that disproportionately affects women.
Furthermore, they are demanding parity with the conditions of the city's street cleaning staff, citing a salary gap of up to 80%. Their demands include salary increases, contracts of at least 25 hours per week, improved extraordinary payments, and access to replacement contracts.
The cleaners accuse both the company and the Bilbao City Council of obstructing negotiations and are calling for a dialogue table to reach an agreement. Further demonstrations are scheduled in various parts of the city until June 19.
