The heart of Bilbao awoke today to a sight that stopped hundreds of citizens in their tracks. The fountain in Moyúa Square, an undisputed icon of the Biscayan capital, appeared with its waters stained an intense red. Although the official authorship is currently unknown, the act bears similarities to previous protest actions, suggesting a possible denunciation of the armed conflicts in Palestine or Iran.
On this occasion, a hand was placed next to the fountain, apparently in protest against the wars. Unlike what happened last September, when the action included elements in the gardens simulating dead babies in Palestine, this time the impact has focused exclusively on the fountain. Nevertheless, the consequences for the urban furniture have been immediate.
The Bilbao City Council has activated its cleaning protocol, although restoring the fountain's usual appearance will not be immediate. According to municipal sources, workers first stopped the water recirculation to prevent the dye from damaging internal mechanisms and pipes.
After removing the stained water, the cleaning team must work on the dry fountain. The main task involves manually scrubbing and cleaning the stone in all areas where the dye may have penetrated or left a mark. The City Council has emphasized that, beyond the material cost, the true expense of this act of vandalism or protest lies in the time and significant human effort required to return the stone to its original state without damage.
Although the symbolism of red water is often used to denounce bloodshed in international conflicts, no group has yet claimed responsibility for the action. The municipal police are already working to identify those responsible for an act that, once again, uses Moyúa Square as a visual platform, necessitating an extraordinary deployment of public cleaning services.
