Among the prominent projects within the Hezkuntza Eraiki 2030 plan are those located in large population centers such as Leioa, particularly the new IES Barandiaran in Aldapabarrena. The Department of Education of the Basque Government considers this a key project, aligned with the general objective of adapting centers to new methodologies, improving energy efficiency, and ensuring accessibility.
Additionally, Dantzerti will relocate to the old Barandiaran center, “strengthening Leioa's educational hub.” Initial work for the construction of the new Jose Miguel Barandiaran Secondary Education Institute building began in February 2025. It will be built on a plot of almost 14,000 square meters in the Sakoneta neighborhood, adjacent to one of the institute's two current buildings (Barandiaran Behekoa), between the Altzaga Ikastola Early Childhood and Primary Education Center and the health center.
With these works, students currently distributed across two buildings will be brought together in a single new building located in the town center. This will not only facilitate family transport logistics but also “strengthen the center's identity as a unified community,” according to the Department of Education. The works are expected to last 22 months. With a total built area of 9,743 square meters, the new building will house five lines of ESO and five lines of Bachillerato.
One of the notable aspects of this project is that its architectural design will also benefit the Altzaga Ikastola Public School. The significant slope of the area where the new institute will be built allows the roof of the sports court to serve as a recreation and sports area for Altzaga Ikastola, which is located at a higher elevation. Thus, “this action also achieves the expansion of the exterior spaces of the Altzaga Public School by 2,360 square meters, benefiting the entire educational community.”
The execution of this urban, educational, and community project will consolidate students from Behekoa and Goikoa —in the Santsoena nucleus—, currently away from the town center, into a single building. The latter will maintain its activity with existing Vocational Training cycles, while the former will be demolished once the new IES is operational.
