The championship, which began this Friday in Sopela, will include various modalities: leather paleta, short pala, individual hand-pelota (men's full court and women's four and a half), doubles hand-pelota, and individual cesta punta on a 36-meter fronton (men's and women's).
The competition will feature 29 events and will visit municipalities such as Deba, Bakio, Ordizia, Barakaldo, Olaberria, Gatika, Beasain, Gernika, Ispaster, Zeanuri, Elorrio, Lemoa, Elburgo, Urretxu, Idiazabal, Galdakao, Abadiño, Segura, Arrasate, Basauri, Lazkao, and Zumarraga. The finals are scheduled for Saturday, June 6, and Sunday, June 7.
The primary objectives of the tournament are, on one hand, to provide selectors with a competitive tool to observe and evaluate players in a real competition context; and on the other, to bring the Euskal Pilota Selekzioa closer to the public. In doubles matches, a format will be established where each player will play with a different partner in each game, thereby strengthening the references available to the coaches. Winners will not secure their ticket to the World Championship but will have strong chances.
Regarding the technical staff, Xalbador Lizardi and Iñaki Peluaga are in charge of the tool section. For women's hand-pelota, Jon Alberdi leads, while Iraitz Olaetxea continues with the men. In cesta punta, Diego Beaskoetxea will take over the men's team and continue with the women's team. The Basque Federation's goal is to specialize young puntistas in the 36-meter modality in the medium term.
