The Mayor of Getxo, Amaia Aguirre, has stated that the municipality has clear objectives for the upcoming years, highlighting housing, social services, accessibility, neighborhood investments, modernization of cultural and sports facilities, and sustainability. According to the council, all these actions are part of a common goal: to enhance citizens' quality of life and prepare Getxo for the future.
Access to housing is a key priority. The definitively approved General Urban Planning Plan foresees the creation of 4,471 new homes, with 3,044 designated as protected housing. Additionally, the council mentioned rental assistance programs for young people aged 18 to 35 and the future Intergenerational Center in Itzubaltzeta/Romoko, which will combine a residence for the elderly with 40 subsidized housing units for young people.
Regarding social cohesion, the Council has allocated 14.69 million euros, a 12.65% increase compared to 2025. The budget for the Home Help Service has been increased by 23%, reaching 3 million euros. Equality policies, youth centers, active aging programs, and collaboration with social organizations will also receive more resources. Furthermore, the new Haurreskola (nursery school) in Itzubaltzeta/Romoko is expected to open in September, offering 34 new public places for children aged 0 to 2.
In terms of accessibility and mobility, the Council has earmarked an initial budget of 450,000 euros for the development of the future Getxobusa, aimed at improving inter-neighborhood connections. A comprehensive modernization of the mechanical escalators on Salsidu avenue has also been put out to tender, with a budget of nearly one million euros. The municipal bicycle loan service and the cycle path network will continue to be strengthened. Additionally, works are planned to complete the pedestrianization of Calle Mayor in Areetako and to improve public spaces in various neighborhoods.
In the area of sustainability, Getxo will continue to promote measures to protect natural areas such as Azkorri and Larrañazubi and to adapt to climate change, including the Climate Shelters Plan. For administrative modernization, 2.62 million euros will be allocated to digital transformation. In culture and sports, Getxo Kulturak (Getxo Culture) will have 14.66 million euros, and Getxo Kirolak (Getxo Sports) will exceed 18.88 million euros.
