The Getxo City Council has mobilized over 171 million euros in services, investments, and strategic projects during the first five months of 2026, maintaining municipal debt at zero. Based on the extended budget that came into effect on January 1st, the Council has incorporated 41.7 million euros from savings accumulated in recent years.
Mayor Amaia Agirre emphasizes that "Getxo has defined its major challenges and is acting upon them. We are promoting housing, strengthening social services, improving accessibility, investing in our neighborhoods, modernizing cultural and sports facilities, and advancing in sustainability".
The recent final approval of the General Urban Planning Plan has provided the Council with a key tool to address the housing access challenge. The new plan includes the construction of 4,471 new homes, of which 3,044 will be subsidized. Added to this commitment are municipal rental subsidies for young people aged 18 to 35 and strategic projects like the future intergenerational center in Romo, which will combine a residence for the elderly with 40 subsidized housing units for young people, promoting new forms of coexistence and community.
The housing-related actions collectively mobilize nearly 5 million euros.
Another focus is social services. In this regard, the aging population, the reconciliation needs of families, attention to youth, and support for vulnerable individuals are among the priorities. In this area, mobilized resources reach 14.69 million euros, an increase of 12.65% compared to 2025.
Regarding accessibility, the comprehensive modernization of the mechanical escalators on Avenida Salsidu is the most significant need. This project has already been put out to tender for 993,347 euros, continuing the interventions carried out in Bidezabal.
Furthermore, in the cultural sphere, Getxo Kultura has a budget of 14.66 million euros, 590,000 euros more than in 2025, while Getxo Kirolak exceeds 18.88 million euros, with an investment allocation of over 6.69 million euros. Additionally, modernizing the internal functioning of the City Council and sustainability are other cornerstone objectives.
