The Basque Government has approved raising investments in Euskadi's electricity distribution network to 153 million euros by 2027, aiming to better meet industrial demand.

The Basque Government has approved increasing investments in the electricity distribution network to 153 million euros by 2027. This increase, to be borne by the distributor i-DE Iberdrola, will rise from 110 to 143 million euros in 2027 to strengthen and digitize the electricity distribution network of Euskadi. Including investments in measures and facilities financed by customers, the total will exceed 153 million euros.
This means that the annual investments planned in the electricity distribution network in Euskadi will double over the last two years. The Basque Government believes this shift in investment trend for 2027 should be accompanied by an incentivizing regulatory framework, suitable for meeting the needs of the projected industrial electricity demand in Euskadi for the coming years.
This investment aligns with the actions outlined in the Ministry's initial proposal for developing the electricity transmission network by 2030, which is currently being processed. The approval on July 28 of the Royal Decree regulating investment plans for electricity transmission and distribution networks in the State has enabled this increase.
The Royal Decree responds to the proposal made by the Basque Government to the Ministry for Ecological Transition and the Demographic Challenge, to increase investments in Euskadi's electricity transport and distribution networks. Specifically, the Basque Government informed the Ministry that the investments projected for 2027 were "necessary, but insufficient".
The Basque Government aims to ensure that the Basque electricity grid can develop at the pace required by Euskadi's decarbonization and industrial competitiveness. The Basque Government's focus remains on confirming new investments to increase the transmission network's capacity in the next five-year period, for which the transmission network's 2030 plan must be approved as soon as possible.
Furthermore, the Basque Government considers it essential to develop key regulatory aspects that will enable increased investments linked to the growth of industrial and residential demand, to enhance energy autonomy and the competitiveness of energy costs.
