The ArcelorMittal plant in Sestao has undergone a 150 million euro investment, boosting industrial activity in Euskadi and preparing to achieve its maximum production capacity for the first time since 2008. This strategic project positions the region as a European leader in low-carbon steel production.
The Sestao plant, utilizing electric arc furnace (EAF) technology and powered by 100% renewable energy, produces high-quality steel with a carbon footprint of 600 kg CO₂e per ton, among the lowest in Europe. This makes it a key asset for the steelmaker's decarbonization strategy and a driver for sustainable industrial development in Euskadi.
ArcelorMittal outlined an ambitious investment plan of 200 million euros to reach an annual production capacity of 1.6 million tons, a milestone not achieved since 2008. The 150 million euros invested over the past four years have funded projects such as the repowering of the Electric Arc Furnace and the automation of the Rolling Mill.
The impact on employment has been significant: the direct workforce has grown by 72%, from approximately 200 to nearly 380 professionals, while indirectly generating employment for around 3,000 individuals. The Minister of Industry, Mikel Jauregi, and the CEO of ArcelorMittal Sestao, Pedro Escudero, visited the plant to confirm that the investments are "progressing well".
The Basque Government and ArcelorMittal have reaffirmed their commitment to Euskadi's sustainable industrial development by supporting the growth of the Sestao plant, a strategic project aiming to solidify the region as a European leader in low-carbon steel production.
