Bilbao City Council, through its Human Rights, Coexistence, Cooperation, and Interculturality Area, has signed a collaboration agreement for €35,000 with the Basque Associations for the Sahara. This agreement aims to support the XXIII Caravan departing from Euskadi in March 2027, bound for the Sahrawi Refugee Camps in Tindouf, Algeria.
The Basque Associations for the Sahara focuses its work on solidarity, human rights, and development cooperation with the Sahrawi people. Bilbao City Council and the Federation have a long-standing history of mutual collaboration, having funded various Basque solidarity caravans under the slogan “Feed a hope” through grants over the past 17 years.
Despite implementing food production projects, such as small vegetable gardens, a poultry farm, and camel and goat livestock, the desert does not produce enough food for the entire refugee population. The majority of the necessary food aid is received through international agencies like UNHCR or WFP, and via the solidarity of civil society sending aid caravans.
