Basauri City Council has concluded the first phase of renovation works in the lower area of Bizkotxalde Park. The final touches are being completed this week, and as a result, the sidewalk running alongside the park will be opened to pedestrians. During the festivities, work on the containers will proceed, while those on the sidewalk in front of the school will be carried out after the San Fausto holidays.
With this intervention, the City Council takes another step towards improving and renovating this large green lung of the municipality, making the lower part of Bizkotxalde Park more accessible, safer, and pleasant for all citizens. These actions have involved an investment of nearly 2 million euros (1,910,989 euros) and align with the Basauri Sustainable Mobility Plan and Accessibility Plan approved in 2025.
The works focus on improving the lower area of the park by enhancing accessibility. Accessibility has been provided to existing stairs, ramps (reducing the slope to less than 6%), and paths. Furthermore, passages that were not previously conditioned but were naturally used by neighbors as paths have been remodeled and integrated into the park as accessible routes.
High-resistance concrete paving stones and printed asphalt have been installed on the sidewalk along the park—from Arizko Ikastola to Azbarrena—in seating areas and on paths. Kerbs have also been renewed, and new street furniture and lighting have been added. Once all the work is finished, 20 new trees will be planted, in addition to those already present. Three trees from the table tennis area have been relocated to another part of the park to renovate this sports area heavily used by citizens. The green surface area will be approximately 500 m2 larger.
The planting of new trees and gardening work will be carried out starting in November. Until October 9th, final touches are being made, including the installation of 20 new benches (bringing the total to 65 new and 10 recovered benches), 9 litter bins, 1 fountain, the sculpture of the parish priest of Pozokoetxe, and railings for the stairs and a ramp.
After the holidays, interventions will take place on the sidewalk and road area in front of Arizko Ikastola and the future nursery school, to ensure greater safety for pedestrians and schoolchildren. To achieve this, the sidewalk will be widened to 4 meters and the road narrowed, which will help reduce vehicle speed. The sidewalk expansion will require the removal of some parking spaces in that area, but in their place, other parallel parking spaces will be created on the opposite sidewalk.
