A new project is set to enhance access to Barakaldo and the BEC from the Rontegi Bridge. The initiative aims to distance the road from residential areas and optimize traffic flow at one of the main entry points to the municipality and the exhibition center. Additionally, pedestrian areas will be improved, and the roundabout character of the BEC junction will be removed. The total investment for this project is estimated at twelve million euros.
Currently, after crossing the Rontegi Bridge, the ramp splits into two lanes: one veers right to connect with La Florida street, passing through Lurkizaga Park; the other links directly to the BEC roundabout, from which traffic is distributed towards the exhibition center, the urban area of the municipality, and Buen Pastor street. The latter reaches Lutxana, providing access to the future urban development in the Sefanitro area, where over 1,600 homes are planned.
This current configuration presents several issues. On one hand, the road leading to La Florida street to enter Barakaldo has a pedestrian crossing with traffic lights, which causes congestion during peak traffic hours. On the other hand, the pedestrian connection between the more urban area of the municipality and Lutxana is made via a 2.50-meter-wide sidewalk located beneath the highway.
Therefore, the project, currently in its public exhibition phase, proposes two major interventions in this area. Firstly, it modifies the exit alignment from the Rontegi Bridge, running more parallel to the main trunk of the BI-30, which allows the road to be moved further from residential buildings. Furthermore, pedestrian passage under the roadways will be improved by eliminating the pedestrian crossing on the La Florida ramp —thus reducing traffic jams— and creating a spacious and pleasant recreational area for the Lutxana neighborhood.
The intervention will involve the demolition of the current waste collection point (garbigune), which is scheduled for relocation, and will free up space in the northern part of Lurkizaga Park and beneath the new ramps. In this case, the Barakaldo City Council will be responsible for developing this space.
