The Basque Government and the Provincial Council of Bizkaia have announced a 743 million euro investment to modernize the Bilbao metro, focusing on fleet renewal and digital infrastructure.

The Transport Consortium of Bizkaia has approved the hiring of technical assistance to coordinate this comprehensive renovation project, aiming to ensure service efficiency for the coming decades.
The plan focuses on three key areas: replacing 37 train units with new five-car models, increasing capacity by 12%; implementing the CBTC system to reduce intervals between trains to 90 seconds; and upgrading the Centralized Command Post (PMC) with new management software.

"Renewing the Bilbao metro fleet is a great opportunity to improve service comfort for everyone and represents a leap forward in digitalization."
