The Municipal Cemetery of Bilbao will once again open its doors to memory and past figures with a new edition of theatrical guided tours.

This new theatrical guided tour initiative, organized by Bilbao Zerbitzuak and starting this Friday, aims to bring the more human and unknown history of Bilbao's cemetery closer to citizens through theater. The project, presented by the Councilor for Health and Consumption, Álvaro Pérez, will revive various historical characters such as Doña Croqueta, Juana Mir, and Enrique Epalza, who are responsible for voicing stories and memories linked to the city's past.
The humorous tone of the visits was evident during the presentation itself. Attendees will be able to hear explanations from Enrique Epalza about the iconography of the Basurto Hospital's roof or anecdotes about Doña Croqueta's gossipy nature. Through these performances, the public will have the opportunity to tour the cemetery from a different perspective, combining historical heritage, personal stories, and episodes from the city's daily life.
The initiative will also bring back illustrious and popular figures such as José Luis Pitarque, described as an "ingenious character of the era" remembered for frequently attending weddings, banquets, and celebrations. “The visits will allow us to tour the cemetery from a different viewpoint, where historical and artistic heritage intertwines with the personal stories that have left their mark on this unique space,” highlighted Councilor Álvaro Pérez.
The theatrical tours are part of Bilbao Zerbitzuak's cultural program. This year's schedule will also include five other thematic routes to discover the architectural and artistic richness of the grounds. Among them, "A Cemetery with Art" stands out, analyzing the monumental evolution over the last 120 years; routes on history and legends; itineraries dedicated to funerary iconography; and others on the site's flora and landscape.
The "War Zone" visit will also return, delving into the lives of anonymous people and illustrious figures linked to various historical and cultural episodes of the city. The program is supported by the interest generated last year: in 2025, 32 thematic tours were organized, with 835 participants, averaging groups of about 26 people. Registrations for this edition are now open on the Bilbao Zerbitzuak website.
