Over the last two decades, Bilbao has solidified its position as a premier stage for major international events, significantly enhancing the city's image and economy. The start of the Tour de France, historic concerts at San Mamés, and European sports finals, among other events, have revitalized the city's pulse and its external projection.
The 2023 Tour de France generated an economic impact exceeding 100 million euros and transformed the city into a global cycling circuit for three days. Furthermore, San Mamés has hosted memorable concerts, including The Rolling Stones (36,000 spectators), AC/DC, and Bruce Springsteen. Fito's concert drew over 47,000 attendees to the new stadium.
Festivals such as the BBK Live and the international reach of the MTV Europe Music Awards, broadcast in over 180 countries, have enriched the city's cultural offerings. In sports, the European rugby finals (over 84,000 spectators) and major UEFA finals are notable, attracting tens of thousands of international fans.
In recent years, new ways of utilizing urban space, like the BBK Ría with concerts along the river, complement the offerings. All these events convey a single idea: Bilbao is a city that provides more than just occasional happenings.
Bilbao has learned to see itself in the mirror of major events, transforming its calendar into a brand of international projection and economic return.
Key events throughout its recent history include The Rolling Stones concert (2003), which established San Mamés as a venue for large-scale music events. The World Series by Renault urban circuit (2005) took over the city center. Bands like AC/DC (2009-2010) and Bruce Springsteen also achieved significant success. La Vuelta (2011, 2016) has passed through the city, and the Basketball World Cup (2014) was an organizational success, selling over 114,000 tickets.
Other recent highlights include the European Rugby Finals (2018), the MTV EMAs (2018), the Red Bull Cliff Diving (2019), and Fito&Fitipaldis' concert (2022), which had the highest attendance to date. The start of the Tour de France (2023) recorded the largest economic return, and the UEFA Women's Champions League Final (2024) and the UEFA Europa League Final (2025) have also been major events.
