In its seventh edition, the BBK Art Route will showcase reproductions of 38 artworks from the Museum of Fine Arts collection across 30 municipalities in Bizkaia. This traveling exhibition, titled 'Animalario', focuses on the representation of animals throughout art history as symbols of power, desire, violence, sacrifice, freedom, or transformation.
Since 2020, this project has brought museum artworks outdoors through large panels, aiming to make art accessible to people who do not typically visit exhibition halls. This time, the route offers an interpretation of how animal figures have historically served as a mirror to the human condition.
The selection, curated by conservator José Luis Merino Gorospe, spans over five centuries of artistic creation, from a 15th-century religious panel to contemporary works such as the feminist poster by Guerrilla Girls or SS Donostian by Daniel Tamayo, created in 2022.
The exhibition includes works that link animals with mythology, such as The Rape of Europa by Martin de Vos or The Infancy of Jupiter by Jacob Jordaens. It also explores animal symbolism in 20th-century art, from the bullfighting metaphor by Luis Fernández to the sacrificial figure of the wounded horse in The Victim of the Festival by Ignacio Zuloaga. Photographs by Alberto Schommer or posters by Guerrilla Girls also use animal imagery to allude to the passage of time or the scarce female presence in museums.
Pop culture also finds its place, as seen in the white dove accompanying Ringo Starr in Richard Avedon's image, referencing the pacifist imaginary of the late sixties. Artists like José Arrue, Aurelio Arteta, or Rosa Bonheur depict a more harmonious and close relationship between people and animals.
The high-resolution reproductions are accompanied by informative texts in Basque and Spanish, as well as downloadable content via QR codes. The exhibition will offer guided tours for schools and the general public. The route will remain in each locality for approximately one week and will pass through municipalities such as Barakaldo, Portugalete, Bermeo, Gernika-Lumo, Basauri, or Durango in the coming months, concluding on December 9.
