Basauri is preparing to host a new edition of Euskal Astea, which will begin on April 17 and last for a week. This year, the City Council has set a clear objective: «to bring the Basque language closer to those who do not know our language or our culture», as stated by the Councilor for Basque Language, María Fernández. Many of the organized activities will revolve around this theme.
The events will kick off at the Gaztegune on Autonomía Street with a party organized by the municipality's youth. That same afternoon, the Social Antzokia will host a dance performance, and the Zutarri tavern will feature a bertso afaria (verse dinner). On Saturday, celebrations will continue at the Gaztegune, with talos (traditional Basque flatbreads) and musical bingo. From 6:00 PM, various groups of dantzaris (Basque dancers), choirs, and other cultural associations from the municipality will perform a kalejira (street parade) through the neighborhoods of Basozelai, El Kalero, San Fausto, Pozokoetxe, Soloarte, and Ariz with songs and dances, concluding in Solobarria Square.
The «Ongi-Etorri Euskarara!» (Welcome to Basque!) sessions, organized by local euskaltegis (Basque language schools), are aimed at all individuals over 16 years old, but are especially focused on those who come from other countries and are interested in starting their Basque language learning journey. These sessions will be held at the Pozokoetxe cultural center on April 20 and at the Bolintxu euskaltegi on April 22, from 10:00 AM to 11:30 AM.
The Ibaigane cultural center will host a round table titled «Etorri berriak eta euskara» (Newcomers and Basque) on Tuesday, April 21, starting at 10:00 AM. To attend, registration must be requested before April 17. On the same Tuesday, there will be a meeting with coaches from different sports clubs in the municipality at Artunduaga to promote the use of Basque in their activities.
Students from Basauri's schools will be the protagonists on Wednesday, participating in a bertso gathering at the Social Antzokia. The mintzodromo (Basque conversation event) will be held in Solobarria Square on Thursday, April 23, in the morning and afternoon, the same place where activities will conclude with a romería (pilgrimage/festival) by the Gautegun group. On Friday, the play «Rikardo III eta ni» (Richard III and I) can also be seen at the Social Antzokia at 8:00 PM.
