The Basque Government will transform the former staff housing building of Basauri prison into a new social insertion center, a resource for inmates in open or third-degree regimes.

The old staff housing building at Basauri prison will be converted into a social insertion center by the Basque Government. This resource will be for inmates in third-degree or open regimes, with similar centers to be replicated in Gipuzkoa and Araba. The Zubieta center will open soon.
Alfonso Gómez, Deputy Minister of Justice and Human Rights, explains the model: "The Basque penitentiary model tends towards reintegration." The new centers will serve to "make the transition into society." Some inmates at Basauri prison lack residences upon receiving third-degree status, so these facilities will be more akin to life outside prison.
The center will have a separate entrance but will be part of the Basauri prison facilities. Initially, 16 room-cells are planned: fourteen double and two for individuals with reduced mobility. The 2,400 square meter building is currently partially disused.
The current building will be demolished and a new one constructed to meet current needs. The new project will include an occupational area with a library, two classrooms, a gym, a laundry room, a health area, and offices, among other features. External access will be through a control post with security systems.
Additionally, specialized teams will be hired to assist inmates in their social reintegration. Companies have until the 25th to submit proposals, with a budget of 363,000 euros (VAT included).
