Barakaldo's Urban neighborhood, established nearly three decades ago on former Altos Hornos land, is set to accommodate 453 new homes, bringing over a thousand new residents to a 300-meter stretch.

The transformation of Barakaldo continues along the riverbanks, where the former Altos Hornos site has given way to one of Euskadi's most ambitious urban projects. Driven by Bilbao Ría 2000, the Urban-Galindo area already boasts over 2,200 homes and continues to expand.
Currently, Urban is the area with the highest construction activity in Barakaldo, with 453 new homes to be added in the coming months. This will result in the arrival of over a thousand new residents within a stretch of just 300 meters.
The completed Torre Inbisa project features a 20-story building with a six-story base, standing 67 meters tall and offering 106 homes. Two other developments are underway: one by Prygesa with 113 apartments, set to open after the summer, and another by Amenabar with 130 homes, scheduled for delivery in spring 2027.
The Basque Government has constructed 108 rental social housing units (VPO) in the area, complemented by another 104 protected homes in development: 78 regional subsidized housing units and 26 affordable rental units, resulting from an agreement between Eretza and Azpiegiturak.
Furthermore, Bilbao Ría 2000 will allocate two more plots for housing, one at the end of the avenue and another near the future bascule bridge connecting to Erandio.
Given the neighborhood's growth, which along with Lasesarre forms Barakaldo's most populous district with over 16,000 residents, locals are requesting more services. In healthcare, the Basque Government is exploring options to relocate or expand the health center to meet demand.
