Following a rockfall last month on a slope next to the road leading to El Regato, the Barakaldo City Council has launched an initiative to guarantee safety on the route. The objective is to "contain the embankment and allow for normalized and safe transit through the area," according to Jon Andoni Uria, the councilor for Works for Neighborhoods and the City.
After the rockfall was reported, one lane was closed and the debris was cleared from the roadway, with traffic managed by alternating passage. Subsequently, a specialized technical inspection identified "two nearby areas with deep transverse cracks in the rocky substrate," primarily caused by erosion from adverse weather conditions and the action of roots from the abundant vegetation on the slope. Due to the risk of further incidents involving large blocks, a technical solution has been implemented to stabilize the embankment.
To achieve this, a triple-twist geonetting is being installed, anchored to the ground with 32-millimeter diameter active bars and secured with steel cabling, to "guarantee the stability of the slope and the safety of the road." The works, which represent an investment of 105,000 euros and keep one lane closed in the direction of El Regato, also include slope clearing, pruning, and the removal of unstable material.
