Over the past ten years, this part of the Bizkaia capital has experienced various events that have significantly impacted the neighborhood. Among these, the murder of Maguette Mbeugou in 2018 stands out. The 25-year-old Senegalese woman was found dead in her home, alongside her 2 and 4-year-old daughters.
When police units arrived, they found the woman with multiple stab wounds. As reported by DEIA, Mbeugou had previously filed a complaint with the Bilbao Municipal Police requesting a protection order, which was denied.
The woman was found with multiple stab wounds, and a protection order had previously been denied to her.
Another case that gained media attention occurred in 2016. The Bilbao City Council reported a series of actions concerning a problematic family, known as 'Los Pitxis', who had committed several robberies in the area. Various arrests were made of individuals linked to this neighborhood conflict.
Coincidentally, the Atxuri neighborhood experienced a similar situation almost four years ago, on April 30, 2022. On that occasion, a man intentionally started a fire in a commercial premises used as a dwelling, where he lived with the victim's wife and young daughter.
In that case, the Bizkaia Provincial Court sentenced the man to 21 years and four months in prison, as the court deemed it proven that he acted with the “intent to kill” the woman to “ensure she would not report him to the Ertzaintza or the court” for his alleged involvement in another criminal act in which both were under investigation.
