Arrigorriaga City Council continues to take steps against the route of the Southern Variant Railway. To this end, a working meeting was held to analyze the latest developments regarding the project and unify criteria as a municipality. The meeting was attended by all local political parties, municipal technicians, engineers from the company Ingeotyc, and residents, with the primary objective of "defending Arrigorriaga's interests," according to municipal sources.
During the meeting, attended by Mayor Maite Ibarra, it was announced that next week the mayor will meet with Susana García Chueca, the Basque Government's Minister of Sustainable Mobility. The purpose is to directly convey the municipality's alternatives and demands: "We want a change in the route or the tunneling of the tracks."
The governing team points out that the project's execution will lead to a significant increase in freight train traffic through the town, "one every 15 minutes, 96 per day, not counting passenger trains, which will result in noise and vibration levels affecting the well-being, rest, and health of the residents."
In response to this situation, a group of residents plans to appear before the Basque Parliament in June. Additionally, the City Council aims to exert pressure in Madrid. To this end, the mayor has repeatedly requested a meeting with Francisco Javier Sánchez Ayala, Deputy Director General of Railway Planning for the Government of Spain, to ensure that the voice of Arrigorriaga's residents continues to be heard.
During the session, a joint strategy was developed for the positions the City Council and citizens will adopt in each of these forums, ensuring synchronized action and a unified defense of Arrigorriaga's interests.
