Iñigo Ansola, the president of the PNV in Bizkaia, has joined the concerns voiced by the Deputy General of Bizkaia, Elixabete Etxanobe, and the Mayor of San Sebastián, Jon Insausti, about the suitability of Bilbao and San Sebastián as host cities for the 2030 World Cup. Ansola highlighted that FIFA's requirements are «very demanding».
In an interview with Bizkaia Irratia, the regional PNV leader urged «responsible action» to determine «if the effort is worthwhile for what will be obtained». Among FIFA's demands is that host cities «avoid» other cultural and sporting activities during the weeks of the competition, scheduled from mid-June to July 21. This could potentially impact events like the BBK Live festival.
Ansola also mentioned FIFA's requests for «dedicated spaces within the city» and «very significant demands on the transport system», in addition to a «hosting fee». While the Basque proposal was pre-selected, the current phase involves «analyzing» whether to proceed. The decision, he stressed, must be made «with responsibility», thoroughly evaluating «if an event of this magnitude can truly have a place in Bilbao and San Sebastián».
“"We must act responsibly to determine if the effort is worthwhile for what will be obtained."
