Science helps us understand the world; art, in turn, invites us to observe, interpret, and feel it from a different perspective. When both fields meet, new possibilities arise for knowing and explaining reality. Therefore, this edition places a special emphasis on museums and cultural spaces, offering opportunities to approach science through art beyond their usual exhibition and dissemination functions.
In San Sebastián, Science Week will invite participants to discover the artistic universe of Eduardo Chillida, starting from the symbolic link between UPV/EHU and the sculptor. Chillida Leku will offer a guided tour and the exhibition "Grafías de arquitectura." Additionally, workshops such as "Dibujo arquitectónico" and "Escaneando el paisaje" will be held to explore Chillida's sculptural world and 3D scanning technologies.
The San Telmo Museum will feature paleoartist Mauricio Antón, specializing in visually reconstructing past species and ecosystems. The exhibition "Mauricio Antón: Arte y Paleontología" will showcase the process of recreating extinct species and ecosystems. On November 6th, Antón will meet with students for "¿Cómo trabaja un paleoartista?", and on November 7th, a "Taller de ciencia para familias" will be offered.
In Bilbao and again in San Sebastián, discussions will focus on how to better understand a work of art and what science can contribute to revealing its secrets. On November 6th, the Bilbao Fine Arts Museum, and on November 7th, Tabakalera, will host sessions dedicated to the painting "Salvator Mundi," attributed to Leonardo da Vinci, with specialists Dianne Modestini and Juan Manuel García-Ruiz participating.
The Itsasmuseum in Bilbao will highlight the diversity and beauty of nature in the exhibition "Secretos de la Costa Vasca," based on samples from UPV/EHU's Marine Benthos research group. In Vitoria-Gasteiz, the BIBAT Museum will host the exhibition "Fernando G. Baptista. El explorador de la infografía científica," demonstrating how scientific infographics transform complex information into visual language.
Furthermore, Science Week will extend its reach to the streets. In Mungia, Bermeo, and Gernika, the traveling urban exhibition "Ciencia en la calle" will be presented, and in Bilbao, in front of the Bizkaia Aretoa, the exhibition "Ciencia y Arte para todas las personas" will promote an inclusive perspective on science dissemination.
The UPV/EHU organization is supported by various institutions for these initiatives, including the Department of Science, Universities and Innovation of the Basque Government, the provincial councils of Álava and Gipuzkoa, and the city councils of Barakaldo, Bilbao, Donostia, and Vitoria-Gasteiz.
