The Urola Garaia mancomunidad will install nearly 800 umbrellas across various locations in the region to protect citizens from heatwaves and raise awareness.

The Urola Garaia mancomunidad is taking further steps to adapt to the consequences of climate change by launching the 'Guardasola Garaia: shade for heat, protection for citizens' campaign. This initiative aims to raise awareness among residents about the risks of heatwaves and to publicize the network of climate refuge areas.
Nearly 800 umbrellas will be installed in several public spaces throughout the region, utilizing the colors of Agenda 2030 and the Urola Garaia climate refuges. These installations will not only be visually striking but will also convey a clear message: protecting ourselves from the heat is a shared responsibility, and the mancomunidad is working to provide safer and cooler spaces.
This initiative is the result of collaboration among various stakeholders. The development agency Uggasa, the municipalities of Legazpi, Urretxu, Zumarraga, and Ezkio-Itsaso, along with educational centers, merchant associations, and the tourism sector, have collectively reflected on climate adaptation strategies and how to prepare municipalities for the impacts of climate change.
During periods of intense heat, citizens are urged to take personal protective measures: avoid direct sun exposure, stay hydrated, and pay special attention to vulnerable individuals, particularly the elderly. Concurrently, the four municipalities and Uggasa are defining a network of climate refuge areas, both indoor and outdoor, to help protect health and well-being during heatwaves.
The campaign also incorporates the work carried out over the past two academic years within the framework of the School Agenda 2030 program. Eight educational centers in Urola Garaia have studied climate change, health, and climate refuges, with student diagnoses highlighting the need for greater information and awareness.
The umbrellas will gradually appear in the four municipalities of the region, with specific locations not announced in advance to maintain an element of surprise. Installation has already begun in Zumarraga, with further placements scheduled for Urretxu on June 30th, Legazpi on July 2nd, and Ezkio-Itsaso on July 20th.
Adapting to climate change is an urgent challenge that requires shade, protection, and community care in the face of rising temperatures.
