The international Movember movement addresses three key areas: prostate cancer, testicular cancer, and mental health, with a particular focus on suicide prevention. The campaign seeks to disseminate information, emphasize the importance of early detection, and create spaces where men can more openly discuss their health and emotional well-being.
In terms of cancer research, two Movember-funded projects were highlighted: the TIGER trial, studying optimal treatments for patients with recurring testicular cancer after chemotherapy, and the IRONMAN project, which collects international data and experiences from advanced prostate cancer patients to improve treatment efficacy and quality of life.
Regarding prevention, the importance of regular medical check-ups and paying attention to bodily changes was reiterated. For mental health, the necessity for men to share their emotions, concerns, and difficulties was stressed, advocating for sincere conversations and mutual support networks.
The mayor of Ordizia, Adur Ezenarro, also emphasized the significance of discussing health and mutual care: «Sometimes, it's very difficult for us to say that something worries us, that we feel pain, or that we need help. We've become accustomed to carrying on, enduring, and often staying silent. But staying silent doesn't make us stronger. Strength lies in taking care of ourselves, asking for help when we need it, and asking those around us how they are doing».
As the mayor pointed out, Movember provides an opportunity to discuss prevention, mental health, and cancer, but also to maintain these conversations throughout the year. «A town is not just made up of squares, streets, and buildings, but of people who care for each other,» he stated. He concluded by thanking all those who organize and promote the campaign and encouraged citizens to join the initiative.
Goierri MoHerri has organized various activities throughout November to raise awareness, encourage citizen participation, and fundraise for research. On Thursday, November 12th, urologist Javier Asparren will give a talk on prostate cancer at the Beasain event hall. On Tuesday, November 17th, Dr. Alexander Muela, a psychologist and professor at the EHU, will speak in Ordizia on suicide prevention in a session titled 'Conversations that Save Lives'.
Regarding solidarity events, a comedy performance will take place on Friday, November 13th, at the Herri Antzokia in Ordizia, featuring Gorka Aginagalde, Iñigo Salero, Alex Rabanal, and Kike Biguri. On Friday, November 20th, the Plazape in Beasain will host a ranchera evening with Chuchín Ibáñez, followed by a social dance session with DJ Txomin.
Additionally, approximately 75 donation boxes will be placed in bars and other establishments in Goierri. The group will also be present on November 7th at the Beasain Black Pudding Competition and at the fairs in Ordizia, Beasain, and Lazkao, selling campaign merchandise such as polos, bags, backpacks, and reusable bottles.
Sports clubs in Goierri will also support Movember by displaying a banner at the start of their matches. The group particularly highlighted the efforts of the Antzar triathlon team members, who annually organize the 'Mójate Lazkao' initiative at the local swimming pool to raise funds.
Last year, Goierri MoHerri raised 8,743 euros through its Movember initiatives, ranking second among teams in Spain for fundraising. This year, they aim to surpass that figure.
During the presentation, the group expressed gratitude for the selfless collaboration of all individuals and entities supporting the campaign. They also acknowledged the work of Eukene Lekuona, who for the past 11 years designed the initiative's posters and merchandise. This year, Markel Galdeano has taken over the design tasks.
Throughout November, the Movember campaign will offer an opportunity to discuss men's health, promote prevention, and support research in Goierri. The group encourages all citizens to participate in the activities and help spread the campaign's message by sporting a mustache.
