A total of 44 runners from the Goierri region, including four women, will take part in this year's Zegama-Aizkorri mountain marathon. Specifically, Karmele Ormazabal from Zegama, Pello Olaberria from Mutiloa, Aitor Garmendia from Itsasondo, and Lara Estebanez from Legazpi have shared their experiences and goals.
For Karmele Ormazabal, this will be her fifth time at the Zegama-Aizkorri. "I wanted to finish fifth, and this year I will try," she stated. Her goal is to "finish and not get injured," although time limits and the weather cause her concern. "It has always been very special for me," she added.
For Pello Olaberria, however, this will be his first time at the Zegama-Aizkorri. As a former cyclist, his main concern is "how I will respond muscularly," as the musculature for mountain running is completely different. "I will go out to enjoy it," he admitted, even though his aim is to finish under 5 hours.
Aitor Garmendia, after winning the Sahara Desert marathon in February, will be running his first mountain marathon. "It will be the longest race I've ever done in terms of time," he said, and his goal is to "arrive intact, without falling, and without collapsing at the finish line." He is worried about the rocky sections of the ridge and the duration exceeding five hours.
Lara Estebanez aims to repeat her positive experience from last year. "My goal is to participate and finish enjoying myself," she said. However, she added that improving her time from last year would be "perfect." She also highlighted the impact of the weather and the technical sections.
