Last Friday, Lazkao celebrated a multicultural festival with the second edition of the Intercultural Festival. The event once again brought together residents of various origins around music, gastronomy, and world traditions. The town's square was filled with people throughout the day, aided by good weather, in a lively and family-friendly atmosphere.
The festival, promoted by Lazkao Anitza, the local ikastola, and the Town Council, kicked off with a parade of traditional attire featuring representatives from seven countries. This exhibition aimed to foster dialogue between different cultures through clothing and customs, becoming one of the afternoon's most striking moments.
Following this, both young and old could participate in various activities and workshops. Children enjoyed a Mexican piñata and sack races, while the public had the chance to explore traditions from other countries through Moroccan henna workshops and the preparation of msemen and Basque talo.
Music and dance also played a leading role. Rhythms from Ecuador and Nicaragua provided the finale to a day where typical dishes and drinks from countries such as Colombia, Morocco, Romania, Mexico, and Euskal Herria were also available for tasting. The gastronomic stalls and performances attracted numerous attendees, filling the square for a large part of the afternoon.
The initiative was born with the aim of strengthening coexistence and social cohesion among people of different origins living in Lazkao. Currently, the town is home to residents from 29 different countries, in addition to the Basque population, reflecting the growth and diversity the municipality has experienced in recent years.
Following the success of the first edition held in 2024, the organization decided this year to expand participation and move the festival definitively to the town square to make it accessible to all citizens. The public's response confirmed the interest generated by a proposal that seeks to turn cultural diversity into a meeting point and a space for coexistence.
