Gipuzkoa Inter-Town Bertsolari Championship Semifinal in Bonberenea

The teams Txingudi A and Goierriko Zumarraga-Urretxu will compete this Saturday for the second spot in the final.

The second semifinal of the Gipuzkoa Inter-Town Bertsolari Championship will take place this Saturday in Bonberenea, at 5:00 PM, to determine which team will secure the second spot in the final.

In this competition, the teams Txingudi A from Irun and Goierriko Zumarraga-Urretxu will perform on stage. A member of the Bidasoa team stated that this championship is proving to be «a gift» and that they will try to secure their place in the final by delivering a «neat» performance.
The team member moved to Hendaia in 2021 and then joined the Irunabar bertsolari school in Irun. Although he has enjoyed bertsos since childhood, he was not a fervent fan. He thought the bertsolari school could be «a space to make new friends and enjoy himself», and highlighted that he found «kind people» who welcomed him «with open arms».
In 2024, he sang for the first time in the qualifying phase of the Gipuzkoa Championship, and has «fond memories». This year, for the inter-town competition, he was encouraged by the possibility of forming two teams in Irun. The team had three objectives: to organize bertso sessions in Irun and its surroundings, to connect the members of the bertsolari school, and to increase interest in bertsos in the area.
In the first phase, teams from the regions of Donostialdea, Oarsoaldea, and Bidasoa competed against each other in a league format, divided into groups. The Txingudi A team won the regional final, and consequently, qualified for the quarter-final knockout round in Hernani. They also won that round and reached the semifinals. The team member stated that «we have performed well, but we did not expect to win the Hernani session and reach the semifinal. It has been a great surprise, and we are very happy».
The Goierri team is composed of three members. The Bidasoa team also consists of three men, one of whom is the most veteran, having participated in the Gipuzkoa Championship, and another is the youngest, who started doing bertsos as a child and has sung in the school championship. The members of the bertsolari school meet every Thursday, and in weeks with performances, they meet more often to distribute exercises, work on them, and prepare their greetings.
The first semifinal was held last Saturday in Oñati. The Leintz team secured their place in the final, after defeating the Zaharrak Berri team from Azpeitia. The final will be on the 30th in Aia. Tickets for the Tolosa session and the final are available on the website bertsosarrerak.eus.
