Last Saturday, Real Sociedad clinched the Copa del Rey final in Seville, igniting immense excitement among its supporters. It has been 38 years since fans last fully enjoyed such a final, when the team triumphed against Atlético de Madrid in a penalty shootout. This historic victory reflects the dedication of both players and fans.
Although there are currently no footballers from Urretxu and Zumarraga in Real, the team received support from these citizens across the globe. In Urretxu and Zumarraga, local councils set up giant screens, and the Gernikako Arbola and Euskadi squares were filled with people. Individuals of all ages and backgrounds gathered, sharing shouts and hugs in an atmosphere of collective euphoria.
Those under 40 had the opportunity to experience a final live for the first time, and children were captivated. For many, it was the most beautiful day of their lives. A similar scene unfolded in Seville; an estimated 800 residents from Urretxu and Zumarraga traveled there, constantly encountering each other amidst the crowds, filled with joy and pride.
Real players also felt the encouragement of fans from Urretxu and Zumarraga living far from home. Although they could not return to their towns or travel to Seville, they watched the match on television, some even waking up in the early hours. For instance, some watched it at the San Francisco Euskal Etxea, followed by a cider house dinner at its fronton, to celebrate the victory.
