Cesareo Ugarte Azkarate (1946), from Beasain, is believed to hold the largest collection of postcards in Goierri and likely in the Basque Country. He began this hobby at the age of 16 in Paris and has been dedicated to it ever since. Today, his impressive collection is housed in various rooms of his home, on shelves filled with albums.

His experience in Paris was the catalyst for his passion. It was seeing De Gaulle at 16 that sparked his interest in culture. After leaving his job as a dyer, his three main passions have been mountaineering, reading, and collecting postcards. He highlighted the strong tradition of postcards in France, where he discovered the Iris kluba, an organization owned by one of the most significant publishers of the time.

Although the Iris kluba closed long ago, Ugarte maintains contact with other collectors across Europe through correspondence. He exchanges, buys, and gifts collections, and his main supplier today is Valentina Bachiller from Guadalajara, who sends him around a thousand postcards monthly.

His collection includes paintings, cities, mountains, monuments, and a wide array of subjects. Ugarte states that postcards allow him to travel to many places worldwide without leaving home. He currently owns over 340,000 postcards, and the number continues to grow steadily.

He organizes his collection into albums, though he sometimes needs to rearrange them. Locals also bring him postcards from their travels, even though he never asks for them. During his own trips with his sister and brother, he has also collected numerous postcards. Looking ahead, Ugarte has no plans to stop and intends to continue pursuing his passion as long as he is able.
