Beasain will become a meeting point for mountain enthusiasts in the coming weeks with the celebration of the XII Tomas Salazar Aizkorri Bira, placing a special emphasis on women's alpinism.

The extensive program organized by Aizkorri Mendizale Elkartea and the Beasain City Council will span over two weeks, with a central focus on women's alpinism this year. The events will combine sports, outreach, education, and mountain culture, aimed at audiences of all ages.
The program kicks off on June 2nd with an orienteering challenge for 11 and 12-year-old schoolchildren at Sagastigutia Park. Following this, on June 3rd, the Igartza Palace will host the screening of the second film from the FEDME's 'Abriendo Camino' project, focusing on an expedition to Greenland, featuring the participation of mountaineers Uxue Loizu and Amaia Agirre.
Another initiative to highlight the presence of women will be the traveling exhibition 'Gailurretan izan gaitun', organized by the Basque Mountain Federation. The exhibition will be open from June 3rd to 12th and aims to recognize the contribution of women to Basque mountaineering.
The main event will take place on June 13th with the XII Tomas Salazar Aizkorri Bira march. This will be a demanding 52-kilometer route with 2,700 meters of cumulative elevation gain, starting at 6:00 AM from the headquarters of Aizkorri Mendizale Elkartea in Beasain. The route will traverse a significant part of the Goierri region, passing through Olaberria, the Idiazabal mountains, Etxegarate, the Zegama landscapes, and the Aizkorri massif, before returning to Beasain via Zerain, Segura, and Ormaiztegi.
On the same day, the VI Gazteen Bira, Aizkorrira Begira will also be held, a 16.8-kilometer march aimed at young people aged 8 to 16. The objective is to foster a passion for mountains among the younger generations.
The main race is named in honor of Tomás Salazar, a beloved figure within Aizkorri Mendizale Elkartea and a local mountaineering reference. Salazar dedicated a large part of his life to promoting mountaineering, and in 2006, the association honored his career.
Registration for both marches is now open. The organization will provide refreshments along the route and will also offer accommodation for those arriving in Beasain the day before the event.
