Summer has entrenched itself in Gipuzkoa in May, prompting Euskalmet to issue a yellow alert for high temperatures and fire risk until Tuesday.

Summer has taken hold in Gipuzkoa in the middle of May and, for now, shows no signs of leaving. This is reflected in the forecasts from Euskalmet, the Basque Meteorology Agency, which predict suffocating heat for an extended period across the entire territory, even posing a fire risk due to the combination of high temperatures, dry grass, arid ground, and gusts of southerly wind.
On Sunday, the yellow alert for high temperatures is concentrated between 1:00 PM and 8:00 PM. Coastal areas are experiencing highs around 28-29 degrees Celsius in Donostia, while inland, temperatures have reached up to 36.1 degrees in Bergara, 35 in Alegia, and over 33 degrees in Arrasate, Ordizia, and Oñati.
Nights, at least, do not appear to be excessively suffocating, with temperatures expected to remain below 20 degrees Celsius. However, from midnight onwards, Euskalmet will activate another yellow alert for persistent high temperatures, which will extend until midnight between Tuesday and Wednesday.
This means 48 hours of alert due to suffocating temperatures, caused by an anticyclonic situation and southerly winds, which will push maximum temperatures higher on Monday and even more so on Tuesday. Consequently, on both Monday and Tuesday, a second alert for extreme maximum temperatures will be activated between 1:00 PM and 8:00 PM throughout the territory.
For Monday, the forecast indicates minimum temperatures will range between 17-18 degrees Celsius anywhere in Gipuzkoa, with maximums rising to 35 degrees inland and 36 degrees on the coast. The only hope is for a slight sea breeze to enter the coast in the latter half of the day.
On Tuesday, significant changes are not expected. Again, very high temperatures are forecast, particularly on the Cantabrian coast, where maximums will once again exceed 35 degrees Celsius. The wind will continue to blow from the southeast, and it is uncertain whether the sea breeze will reach all coastal points. Highs of around 36-37 degrees Celsius are expected on the coast and inland. Beyond Tuesday, the situation does not appear likely to change in the following days.
The effect of these temperatures, the southerly wind, and the abundance of dry grass from winter and early spring rains have also led Euskalmet to warn that fire risk is high throughout the territory on both Monday and Tuesday. It is worth remembering that during the hot days of early April, Euskadi was the only region in the entire Cantabrian coast to be spared from fires, so increased caution is advised in the coming days.
