A conference organized by the Udako Euskal Unibertsitatea (UEU) in Azpeitia, Gipuzkoa, on June 19th will focus on the legal aspects of agriculture and food systems, exploring opportunities and challenges for public policies.

On June 19th, Azpeitia (Gipuzkoa) will host a conference organized by the Udako Euskal Unibertsitatea (UEU), centered on the legal perspective of agriculture and food systems. The event aims to examine the opportunities and challenges for developing food sovereignty, agroecology, and local projects within public policies, from a critical and transformative viewpoint.
According to the organizers, "often, the legal framework is experienced as an obstacle for agroecology, food sovereignty, or small local projects. However, at other times, it can also be an opportunity and a tool for social transformation."
The conference will cover the topic through six lectures and two round tables. The first lecture, titled Public Management of Land in the Basque Country: Legal Framework and Opportunities for Local Entities, will feature Patxi Iriart (member of EHLG) and Maribi Joaristi (secretary of the Oiartzun City Council). Following this, members from Marinaleda and Tantai Cooperatives will explain how public land management can be used for social transformation.
Farmers' working conditions will also be discussed. The Common Agricultural Policy of Europe will be analyzed by Joseba Andoni Terreros (Director of Rural Development for the Basque Government) and Ainhoa Lete (Deputy Mayor of Bergara). Additionally, experiences from Menorca and Oiartzun will be shared by Vicenç Tur (municipal secretary from a town in Menorca) and Iker Sarriegi (member of Elika cooperative).
After lunch, two workshops will be held. The first will address the question, "How to feed our towns from agroecology and the realm of public policies?", while the second will explore the topic "Defining Land and Labor in popular food strategies" to conclude the day.
This conference has been organized collaboratively by several stakeholders: UEU, EHU-Gezki, Biolur, Landaola, and Ekintzakoop, coordinated by Mirene Begiristain.
